Many years before the discovery of Australia by Europeans, the Macassan traders from Indonesia explored the northern coast of Australia in search of trepang. The Macassans and the Aboriginals formed an active trading relationship As the traders departed they would hoist the flag of the fleet. Today the Aboriginal people of north-east Arnhem Land raise a flag in respect for a departed soul.
